Demographics
Population
Historic
The region has experienced dramatic growth in population since the 1960′s except for a general slow down in the 70′s and 80′s. However, a growth resurgence by the end of the 80′s and through the 90′s brought about by the continuing development of the northern part of this area. The total population now is over 185,000 residents.
Current
The latest population figures for the Tri-Cities area are:
Coquitlam – 112,278
Port Coquitlam – 51,423
Port Moody – 23,819
(2000 GVRD/ BC Stats estimates)
Projected
The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) estimates that the population of the local region will increase to over 250,000 in the next 25 years. The 1996 population projections alone were outstripped by almost 2,500 people. An extensive land supply is available to accommodate the projected growth all over this area. Among them are Westwood Plateau and Burke Mountain in Coquitlam, the northern areas and Heritage Mountain in Port Moody, as well as the Riverwood area in Port Coquitlam.
