Choosing your business year-end
|
 |
If you’ve recently started a new business, one of the many
decisions you’ll face the first year is choosing a year-end
date. Although many businesses have a December 31 year-end, not
all are required to. The legal structure will determine how much
flexibility you have.
Sole Proprietorship or Partnerships
Since 1995 all sole proprietorship or partnerships are required
to report their income on a calendar basis for tax purposes. While
it is still possible to have a non-calendar year-end for accounting
purposes it is generally not advised given the complexity of tracking
the two separate time frames.
Corporations
The year-end for a corporation can be any date in the year; however, a
month-end date is the most common. The first year can range in
length from one day to as long as 53 weeks. Once chosen, the date
remains the same for all subsequent year ends. Although you may
submit a request to Revenue Canada to change the year-end date, the
request is not always granted.
Tax Considerations
One of the many benefits of using a corporate structure for your
business is the ability to minimize tax through tax deferral. In
some situations, you may be able to claim the management bonus expense
in the current corporate tax year but defer paying personal tax until
the following tax year.
